White Sox Beat Twins To Make Playoffs

The Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 1-0 tonight to advance to the postseason to play the Tampa Bay Rays.

The White Sox were led by a dominating performance by pitcher John Danks and a mammoth home run from slugger Jim Thome. Ken Griffey, Jr. also had a strong throw from CF to throw out a runner at the plate, which proved to be a big play in the game.

I'm not surprised that Danks came up big tonight, because I had talked positively about him back in July:

Danks has been excellent this season posting a 7-4 record with a 2.67 ERA, 94 strikouts and 162 ERA+ in 114.7 innings. Statiscally speaking, he has been the best pitcher on the White Sox this season and Beyond the Boxscore took a look at why he has been so successfull. The conclusion is that Danks is getting more ground ball outs than in previous years, which is probably due to a combination of his addition of a cutter, increasing velocity, and different break from his slider/curveball. At just 23 years old, the White Sox could have a solid left handed pitcher for years to come if Danks can keep pitching this way.

Danks was the White Sox best pitcher all season, despite finishing with a record of just 11-9. He had the lowest ERA of any White Sox starter(3.49) and the best ERA+(132). He certainly looked great tonight and the White Sox would not be in the playoffs right now without him.

By the way, I am loving the baseball coverage by TBS, which should come as no surprise because the basketball coverage by TNT/TBS is always solid. It would be nice if the other stations could cover sports as good as TNT and TBS do.

NFL Picks - Week 4 Standings

Ed from Ed The Sports Fan beat out Joe from What's The 401?!?! and me of course, by going 7-6 against the spread in Week 4. Make sure you hit up Ed before you call up your local bookie!

Here is a look at the Week 5 spreads and who I would pick as of right now:
A couple things jump out at me here:

-The first being the huge 17 point spread for Dallas over Cincinnati. That's a pretty big spread for Dallas to cover and they could be up three touchdowns and give up a meaningless score at the end of the game and not cover. These are the kind of things you have to look out for when betting such a huge spread. Of course if Carson Palmer sits out again, which is likely, it might be a good bet.

- Interesting that Buffalo and Arizona is a pick. I guess that Buffalo is still not going any respect from betters or else they should be favored in this game.

- I'm surprised Philadelphia is a 5 point favorite over Washington. To me that spread should be anywhere from a pick to 3 points. 5 seems a little high, but I actually think Philly will win the game. I just don't think they will cover.

- Carolina always screws me whenever I bet for or against them. This week I think they will cover the 10 point spread over Kansas City, so I picked the Chiefs instead. Let's see if that strategy works.

- Green Bay and Atlanta is off because of the injury to Aaron Rodgers. I would imagine the Packers will be a 7 point favorite at least once they announce that Rodgers will play.

DILATED PEOPLES & BEAT JUNKIES DJ/PRODUCER, DJ BABU, PREPS THE RELEASE OF HIS LONG AWAITED STUDIO LP DUCK SEASON 3

DJ BABU’S DUCK SEASON 3 FEATURES TRACKS WITH BISHOP LAMONT, MF DOOM, DILATED PEOPLES, SEAN PRICE, TERMANOLOGY, M.O.P., LITTLE BROTHER, KARDINAL OFFISHAL, STRONG ARM STEADY, GUILTY SIMPSON, PERCEE P, A.G

A world-famous DJ with active memberships in Dilated Peoples and Beat Junkies among his most notable accomplishments, DJ Babu has made a noteworthy evolution. The Los Angeles-based turntablist also stands as one of underground rap’s fastest-rising producers.

Waiting almost five years after the release of the previous Duck Season installments, DJ BABU has been carefully crafting the final saga in his highly acclaimed hip-hop trilogy. What started out for Babu as a DJ compilation, the Duck Season series has come full circle to become a production showcase for the legendary turntablist; not to mention, his finest work to date.

“It started out as a mixtape that featured some of my favorite tracks,” explains DJ Babu. “Now it has fully evolved into a platform of my own production. The album is still presented in the classic Beat Junkie mixtape style, but that’s just a clever way for me to disguise my LP.” Indeed, working with Dilated Peoples aided DJ Babu in his evolution as a producer. Throughout the trio’s four albums, DJ Babu was steadily gaining knowledge and insight on how to craft meaningful and memorable soundbeds. Now, he has combined his far-reaching creative abilities into one project, the rock-solid Duck Season 3.

This evolution from DJ to producer is on full display throughout DJ Babu’s sonically superior Duck Season 3. The fast-moving collection showcases all of Babu’s quickly expanding talents, from mixing, juggling, blending and scratching -- as well as producing. Entirely produced by Babu, the line-up on Duck Season 3 reads like a hip-hop’s who’s who. While Babu includes many familiar faces like M.O.P., MF DOOM, Dilated Peoples and Sean Price, he also plants his ear to the streets, recruiting some of today’s hottest new talent like Bishop Lamont and Termanology.

A West Coast veteran in his own right, Babu has achieved a sound that can’t be labeled by region or style. This album could be equally appreciated in the Bronx, Compton or anywhere in between. Duck Season 3 is a treat for all the true B-Boy’s out there and a testament to the fact that hip-hop’s golden era is alive and well and as Babu concludes the vine between the golden era and today is still deeply rooted “allot of the DJs that I looked up to became great producers, from Dr. Dre to DJ Premier to Pete Rock. In a lot of ways, I’m trying to carry that same torch, where hip-hop is still rooted within DJing and records.”

NBA Star Alonzo Mourning kicks off "Ballin With Books" to encourage reading

The Mississippian who brought the world Conversations Book Club, Hiphop and Books literacy campaign and Art, Books and Beats is ready to introduce another exciting literary campaign: "Ballin' With Books"!

NFL Weekly

NFC East: With the Redskins knocking off the Cowboys 26-24 yesterday, there should be no doubt that the NFC East is the best division in football. I had the Redskins ranked as the 9th best team in the NFL last week and they certainly proved they are a top 10 team by beating Dallas. It's a shame that a team in the NFC East is going to miss the playoffs, while one of the mediocre teams out west will get in instead. Yes, I'm already slotting in 3 teams from the NFC into the playoffs. Still one of these four teams is going to miss out and it will be interesting to see which team will be the odd team out. The NFL is a week to week game now and just because one team is up now doesn't mean things will stay that way. I really like the way Washington is playing right and I think Dallas has too much talent to miss out on the playoffs. The Giants look solid once again, but I would not be surprised if they have a stretch of games when they struggle. Philadelphia could be the team that misses out, because they just seem to have a history of coming up short and I think losses like they just had against the Bears could come back to cost them in the end. At the same time, I think Philadelphia beats Washington at home next week, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Jason Campbell: I couldn't talk about the NFC East without dedicating some time to Jason Campbell, who continues to impress me this season. Now maybe Jim Zorn's west coast offense has helped Campbell, but I couldn't help but watch him during the game yesterday and start to think that he is maturing into a star QB for the Redskins. Campbell has been phenomenal this year completing 65.3% of his passes, while throwing for 878 yards and 6 touchdowns. Most importantly, the Redskins as a team haven't turned the ball over once in four games and certainly that is credit to the maturity of Jason Campbell. Campbell is getting little publicity right now for the way he is playing and I have to wonder why? Right now he is the best QB in the NFC East, not Romo, not Manning, not even McNabb. Sure, those guys are playing well, but Campbell is playing better than all of them right now and he deserves some shine.

Tennessee Titans & Buffalo Bills: The Tennessee Titans and Buffalo Bills continue to roll and are both now 4-0 on the season. I really like both of these teams to keep playing well throughout the season because they both have fairly easy schedules. I will be looking forward to the Titans matchups against Indy, Jacksonville, Green Bay, and Pittsburgh, which are the toughest games left for the Titans. Meanwhile, the Bills square off with San Diego, New England, Denver, and the NY Jets for their toughest games. Certainly all winnable games for both teams and those are the toughest games left. The rest of their schedules are filled with teams like Miami, Cleveland, Kansas City, and Detroit. If Tennessee and Buffalo win 12 plus games this year, then it is more proof that the NFL is just a year to year game now and the schedule has as big a part of who makes the playoffs as any other factor.

Don't get me wrong though, both of these teams are solid, especially on defense. The Titans defense has just been amazing allowing only 11.5 points a game, which is 2nd in the NFL, and just 263.5 yards a game, which is good for 5th in the NFL. Buffalo's defense has been almost as good giving up just 15.8 points a game and 280.5 yards, good for 5th and 7th in the NFL respectively. These teams certainly cane play with the best of them, but the added advantage of an easy schedule could help them get first round byes in the playoffs, which would make each team just one game closer to the Super Bowl.

Other NFL News:

- The Rams fired head coach Scott Linehan after starting 0-4 this season. Linehan and the Rams had lost 17 of their last 20 games and sport one of the worst defenses in the NFL giving up a whopping 36.8 points a game.

- The Steelers took two big hits last night, as both Rashard Mendenhall and Kendall Simmons were injured and are out for the season. Mendenhall fractured his shoulder, while Simmons tore his right Achilles. The Steelers might have won last night, but I still think they are going to struggle with their tough schedule the rest of the way; and losing two key performers certainly doesn't help.

- Brett Favre threw for a career high 6 touchdowns against the Arizona Cardinals, leading the Jets to an explosive 56-35 victory.

- Sad news for Jacksonville Jaguars offensive lineman Richard Collier, who is paralyzed below the waist and his left leg was amputated, after getting shot earlier this month.

Fantasy Stars of the Week:

Laveranues Coles: 8 receptions, 105 yards rushing, 3 TDs

Larry Johnson: 198 yards rushing, 2 TDs

Brett Favre: 289 yards passing, 6 TDs

Fantasy Waiver Wire Pickups of the Week:

Steve Breaston, WR, Cardinals: 9 receptions, 122 yards receiving

Robert Meachem, WR, Saints: 99 yards receiving, 1 TD

Lance Moore, WR, Saints: 7 receptions, 101 yards receiving, 2 TDs

Anquan Boldin Resting At Home After Being Knocked Out (Video)

Good news for Arizona wide receiver Anquan Boldin, who was knocked out with a vicious helmet to helmet hit from the Jets Eric Smith. Boldin did not suffer any serious injuries and is resting at home. That is definitely a relief because after Boldin got hit, it did not look good for him. You can check out the video below to see the play. Hopefully Boldin will be able to return back to the field soon.

MLB Weekly

Milwaukee Brewers: The Milwaukee Brewers won the NL Wild Card and made the postseason for the first time in 26 years. Regardless of what happens for the Brewers in the playoffs, the C.C. Sabathia trade has paid off for them, because just making the playoffs is a big step for this team. The Brewers will have to square off against the Phillies in the first round and I think they will have a chance to beat them because of Sabathia and hopefully a healthy Ben Sheets. The key for the Brewers is going to be their hitting, which at times can struggle, but they might pick it up from the excitement of being in the playoffs.

New York Mets: The flip side of the Brewers getting in the playoffs is that the Mets choked away their season once again. The Mets led the NL East by 3.5 games with 17 games to play and ended up missing out on the playoffs completely after finishing the season 7-10. The Mets once again will face an offseason filled with questions about why they didn't make the playoffs. In their defense, it really hurt their bullpen when Billy Wagner went down and the Brewers picking up Sabathia was definitely a boost to that club that the Mets just couldn't match.

AL Central: The AL Central is going to come down to the wire with the Twins and White Sox tied in the loss column and the White Sox squaring off today against the Tigers in a make up game. The Twins were able to sweep their series with the White Sox earlier in the week and that is how the race became as tight as it is right now. If the White Sox win today, then they will square off against the Twins in an elimation game on Tuesday. The winner will go on to play the Tampa Bay Rays.

Mike Mussina: Mike Mussina won 20 games for the first time in his career and became the oldest pitcher to ever win 20 games for the first time. Mussina now has 270 wins and has an outside shot at reaching 300 for his career. However, there was also talk that Mussina might retire, because he feels like he will have to play 3 more seasons in order to reach 300 wins. So it will be retirement or 3 more seasons for Mussina. I personally think Mussina should be a Hall of Famer even if he retires after this season. He was one of the best pitchers of his era and to finish with 270 wins, 2,813 strikouts, a 3.69 ERA, and 122 ERA+ is definitely impressive. Mussina currently ranks 19th all time in strike outs and is tied for 33rd in wins.

Other MLB News:

- Rumor is that the Toronto Blue Jays are going to offer A.J. Burnett a 4 years, $54 million contract. Burnett had one of his best seasons ever this year finishing with an 18-10 record, 4.07 ERA and 231 strikeouts in 221.3 innings. Burnett had career highs in wins, innings pitched, strikouts, and games started.

- Carl Crawford was activated from the DL this week, which was somewhat of a surprise because most believed that he was down for the season after injuring a tendon in his finger. Crawford was only available as a defensive replacement and for pinch running, but he may be ready for Tampa's first playoff series. If Crawford can play then that would be a big boost for the Rays offense, because Crawford's speed definitely is a weapon the Rays could use in their lineup.

- Here's some late news about the Red Sox Josh Beckett. He injured his side warming up and is getting his start pushed back until Game 3. If he's not healthy then that could be a big blow for the Red Sox.

- Detroit Tigers closer Todd Jones has announced his retirement. Jones finishes his career with 319 saves and a 3.97 ERA. His career high in saves was 42 in 2000.

Verse of The Week

Not much to chose from for Verse of The Week honors this week. I chose this verse from Termanology from his "We Killin' Ourselves" joint off his album that drops on Tuesday, Politics As Usual.

Verse of The Week

He was a younger cat,
seen about 100 gats
Only really held a couple,
but he wasn't scared to hustle
'Cause he figured that, if you want your wig intact,
you wouldn't fuck with the cat with the gorilla mack
So he stole Prada,
and he kept his nose powder
Caught his first body, had to take a cold shower
What's the word? Then he body an old timer
Caught a third, now he runnin' like Obama
These are our kids, growing up with no father,
no momma, no honor, no faith, no karma
and they sight just like the Northern Lights
on the corner nights where dice games are more than shiest
Kids look up to Pac, livin' the mortal life
Wanna be 50, but they don't really wanna get busy
Young boys kill over pussy,
money, and gang colors
Cocaine lovers, baby mommas insane jealous
We cane sellers, or we stickin' up bank tellers
Take a chance, shootin' with cops who aim better,
and they ain't let up, six shots into a sedan
America's worse nightmare, guns in kid's hands.
(Termanology, We Killin' Ourselves, Verse 2)

50 For President - 50 Cent

New joint from 50 Cent that I had overlooked for a little while, but the beat on this joint is actually pretty tight. 50 makes some references to going back to his old style, which is why I think it's good when certain MC's fall off, because then they are forced to come back with some better music. I'll definitely be checkin' for this next 50 Cent album to see what he brings to the table production wise.

The Best Player In Baseball: Albert Pujols vs. Alex Rodriguez

When the discussion of the best player in baseball comes up, the conversation usually includes both Albert Pujols and Alex Rodriguez. There are a few reasons why I think Pujols is clearly the best player in baseball ahead of A-Rod. Pujols is probably a better fielder and A-Rod has more speed but what sets them apart in my mind is the approach Pujols takes at the plate compared to the one A-Rod takes.

A-Rod is a great power hitter and has tremendous talent but he is not a great “hitter” in the way that he approaches at-bats which is why he struggles in certain situations. That is what sets Pujols apart from him in my mind. Pujols is a career .334 hitter compared to A-Rod’s .306 and Pujols would probably hit that good average wise no matter how big and strong he was.

The biggest reason I think Pujols is a better hitter than A-Rod is that he has a career OPS of 1.048, while A-Rod’s is at .967. Sure, A-Rod's number is more than respectable, but Pujols' OPS is just historically great. In fact, he ranks 5th all time in OPS behind only Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Lou Gherig, and Barry Bonds.

Here are two more reasons that I believe Albert Pujols is a far better hitter than A-Rod:

- Pujols is a more complete hitter than A-Rod because he goes with the pitch and uses the whole field, while A-Rod sometimes because too pull happy. I couldn’t find any historical data, but Pujols hit to the center & right of the field 50% of the time last year, while A-Rod was at 39% of the time and I would imagine he is even less so this season. I think Pujols goes with the pitch more which makes him tougher to get out, while A-Rod is easier to get out because he might try to pull a pitch he should be going the other way on. I just have seen too many A-Rod at bats where he just looks like he doesn’t have a clue up there, which tells me he doesn't have a very good approach to his at-bats and is relying more on his talent. I think A-Rod could be just as good as Pujols if he went the other way more and became less of a pull hitter.

- Pujols strikes out way less than A-Rod about 60 times per season compared to A-Rod about 120 times per season. To me that means that Pujols has better bat control and is a better hitter than A-Rod because he is putting the ball in play more often which gives him a better chance to get a hit. Striking out gives you no chance obviously. So Pujols is putting the ball in play on average about 60 more times per season just based on strikeout differential alone. That means an extra 60 times that Pujols has a chance to do something productive at the plate.

That’s why I believe A-Rod relies more on his talent than his approach. He’s so gifted he can make mistakes at the plate and get away with them sometimes, while Pujols uses both his immense talent and solid approach at the plate. Since A-Rod relies on his talent more than Pujols, I think once A-Rod’s talent starts to slip he will decline a lot more rapidly then Pujols will.

They might have the same skill set when they are both 38 years old for instance, but I think Pujols will still be able to put up better numbers because of his approach at the plate. When A-Rod's skills start to decline I think it will bring down his power from 35-50 range to 25-35 range. Basically I believe that Pujols will age more like Manny Ramirez (130-150 OPS+ range), while A-Rod will be more like Griffey, Jr. (100-120 OPS+). Still productive but far from being a great hitter.

Press Releases:

Common Market announces September 9th release of Tobacco Road on HYENA/ MassLine.

"Scion’s flow is liquid, with superb word choice and breath control, while anyone who has heard Rawkus’ Blue Scholars knows Sabzi’s old-school soul fueled beats easily rival those of 9th Wonder." - Pop Matters

"Common Market have created a work that's brought them closer to the region of hiphop greatness. This is no exaggeration." - The Stanger

In the wake of critical acclaim for their fervid spring release of the Black Patch War EP, Common Market and HYENA/ MassLine (RA Scion and Sabzi [Blue Scholars]) present the new Common Market Full Length Tobacco Road, available September 9th 2008.

Tobacco Road showcases a more lyrically engaged RA Scion over Sabzi’s most creative and melodic compositions to-date. It is laden with heavy introspection and RA Scion’s staunch personal convictions on life, love and art with meaning, but is noticeably absent of the feeling of pseudo-evangelical idealism. Where Common Market carried youthful directives such as “liquor stores [should be] raised to make way for art galleries,” the more mature Tobacco Road is circumspect in its approach: “…planted seven rows – will it ever grow? Heaven only knows… Set it deep into the earth, work and serve, all the rest – let it come or not…”

The album begins by setting the scene in rural Kentucky where the audience attends a fiery Southern Baptist sermon pertaining to honest labor. The intensity of the pastor’s delivery coupled with the implication of his assertion “NO FREE RIDES!” adequately prepares the listener for what is to come on “Trouble Is,” the album’s cornerstone track, craftily establishing the proverbial farmer as the LP’s central character.

The struggle of the farmer continues on tracks such as “Gol’Dust” and “Slow Cure,” as it becomes evident to the discerning listener that he and the emcee are, in fact, one in the same. Tobacco Road, from beginning to end, is an allegorical tale of service to the community from the perspective of an active participant; it touches freely on the good, the bad, and often times the ugly.

The album is not an “easy read,” however, and was not fashioned to be fully digested in a single sitting. Tobacco Road is comprised of 18 tracks, within which lie hidden gems which the listener will appreciate with dedicated discovery. Upon closer examination, you’ll find the incorporation of seasonal progression in reference to the album’s agricultural influence. But as important to this album is it’s groove and fantastic production. Sabzi has prepared a masterpiece complete with hard-hitting drums, soul-drenched samples and authentic piano compositions; the album’s outro, a 90-second impromptu display of Sabzi’s command over the ivories, serves as an expert auditory summation of all the emotion packed into Tobacco Road.

NFL Picks - Week 4 -2008:
Picks of the Week:

Best Bet Pick: Buffalo (+8) at St. Louis. If Buffalo doesn't beat St. Louis by more than 8 points than they should be ashamed of themselves because St. Louis is just awful. I think the Bills are legit and will pound on St. Louis just like the Giants, Seahawks, and Eagles did. I also like Philly (+3) over the Bears because they are going to blitz the hell out of Kyle Orton.

Sleeper Pick: Atlanta (-7) at Carolina. I've gotten all 3 of my sleeper picks right so far, which is amazing considering I've been getting most of the other picks wrong. This could be the week I go down, but I think that the Atlanta running game and defense is good enough to stay within 7 points of Carolina.

Danger Game: NY Jets (+1.5) over Arizona. Right now Arizona is playing much better than the Jets, but the Jets probably need this game pretty badly. This is also Arizona's second straight road game. Favre is banged up but the Jets defense is not as bad as it looked last week. A couple of botched onside kicks, a fumble by Thomas Jones, and a pick for TD by Favre led to the Chargers high point total. I will be staying away from this one.
