NFL Picks - Week 13 - 2008


Here are the Week 13 picks from Me, Ed from Ed The Sports Fan, and Joe from What's The 401?!?!.

NFL Picks - Week 13 -2008:
Picks of the Week:

Best Bet Pick: Tennessee (-11) at Detroit. Tennessee is coming off their first loss of the season and I think they will want to try and take it out on Detroit by pounding them on the ground. Detroit is the worst team in the NFL against the run and running the ball is what the Titans do best offensively. It's possible Detroit might play better because they are playing on Thanksgiving, but I've seen better Detroit teams than this one get blown out on Turkey Day.

Sleeper Pick: Seattle (+12.5) against Dallas. Seattle was the only underdog I picked this week that most people probably won't be picking. That's pretty much the only reason I have them as the sleeper pick of the week. I think 12.5 points is a lot, but Seattle sucks so they could easily get blown out by Dallas. Seattle is the big underdog that I think is most likely to cover though.

Danger Game: Green Bay (-3) over Carolina. I don't trust Carolina on the road at all and Green Bay's defense has been shaky against the run and New Orleans was even able to expose their pass defense. If I had to pick a team in this game I would go with Green Bay to bounce back at home, but I wouldn't bet against Carolina beating them either, which is why I would stay away from this one.

NFL Power Rankings - Week 12

Here are my NFL Power Rankings through Week 12, with last weeks rankings in parentheses:

1. New York Giants (10-1) (2)

The Giants reclaim the # 1 spot in the power rankings after Tennessee lost their undefeated season in Week 12. The Giants also had a nice road win in Arizona.

2. Tennessee Titans (10-1) (1)

The Titans finally lost and I was pretty shocked that the Jets were able to score as many points as they did on Tennesse. They should get back on track in Week 13 on Thanksgiving against Detroit.

3. New York Jets (8-3) (6)

The Jets now have back to back road wins over the Patriots and Titans and have won 7 of their last 8 overall. In Week 13, they get the Broncos at home, which should mean another big day for Thomas Jones running behind that solid offensive line.

4. Pittsburgh Steelers (8-3) (4)

The Steelers travel to New England this week, which is a game that has huge playoff implications for both teams. The Steelers will hope to slow down Matt Cassel after he has had back to back games with 400 yards passing.

5. Dallas Cowboys (7-4) (7)

Dallas is 2-0 since Tony Romo returned and will have a great chance to make it 3-0 against Seattle on Thanksgiving. 5th is probably a lot higher than most people would have them ranked, but honestly teams 5 through 13 on my power rankings are all pretty similar and I don't see much difference between any of them.

6. Carolina Panthers (8-3) (3)

I'm still not convinced that Carolina can win on the road, but they will get another shot at it in Week 13 against the Packers.

7. Arizona Cardinals (7-4) (5)

I was tempted to put the Cardinals even lower because they are only 3-4 outside of the NFC West and all 3 of thoses wins came at home. If they finish with just 9 or 10 wins and 6 of those wins come from beating teams in the NFC West, then you have to at least be skeptical about how good they really are. If they lose at Philly this week then I can't see this team getting passed the second round of the playoffs and maybe not even winning in the first round depending on the matchup. Most likely they will have to play either Dallas, Washington, Carolina, Tampa Bay, or Atlanta in the first round.

8. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-3) (9)

I still don't like this team enough to separate them from the group of teams ranked 5 through 13 and I don't expect that to change even though they have an excellent chance to win the division.

9. Indianapolis Colts (7-4) (8)

The Colts have won 4 games in a row and play Cleveland, Cincinnati, Detroit, and Jacksonville the next 4 weeks before finishing up with the Titans who might be resting their players by then. I see this team winning at least 10 games and most likely 11, which would almost certainly gaurantee them a playoff spot.

10. New England Patriots (7-4) (10)

It's amazing how this Patriots season has turned out. After Tom Brady got hurt and Matt Cassel was named the starter, I wrote about how the Patriots defense needs to step things up or else the Patriots won't be able win with Cassel at QB. Now it looks like Cassel is carrying the team and the defense is what might hold them back. Who would have ever thought that?

11. Washington Redskins (7-4) (11)

The Redskins have a huge game this week against the Giants at home. At 7-4, they are tied with the Cowboys and Falcons for the last playoff spot in the NFC and can't afford to lose ground on either one.

12. Atlanta Falcons (7-4) (12)

The Falcons beat down the Panthers at home in Week 12 and now must travel to San Diego to face a struggling Chargers squad. I think the Falcons will have a good chance to win this game as long as their defense shows up.

13. Baltimore Ravens (7-4) (14)

The Ravens might find themselves tied for first after Week 13. The Steelers have to travel to New England, while the Ravens get to travel to Cincinnati, which is a much easier matchup.

14. New Orleans Saints (6-5) (18)

The Saints demolished the Packers on Monday Night and still have a legitimate chance to make the playoffs if they can win the rest of their divisional games.

15. Miami Dolphins (6-5) (15)

Miami is the lucky team that gets to play the Rams this week, which should leave them at 7-5 after Week 13.

16. Minnesota Vikings (6-5) (20)

The Vikings play the Bears in Week 13 at home and I think they will win that game and take control of the NFC North.

17. Buffalo Bills (6-5) (21)

Buffalo blasted the Chiefs and now will try to do the same to the 49ers. These last two games against the Chiefs and 49ers will keep them in the playoff picture for now, but I still think they will come up short.

18. Chicago Bears (6-5) (19)

The Bears face off with the Vikings in Week 13 in a game that could decide the eventual winner of the NFC North.

19. Philadelphia Eagles (5-5-1) (13)

The Eagles are a mess right now and that is pretty obvious for just about anyone to see.

20. Green Bay Packers (5-6) (16)

The Packers too a beating on Monday Night against the Saints. They now face a must win game against Carolina.

21. Denver Broncos (6-5) (17)

I have no idea how the Broncos go into Atlanta and beat the Falcons, but then turn around and got crushed by the Raiders at home. It makes absolutely no sense and it's a shame that a team from the AFC West is going to make the playoffs.

22. San Diego Chargers (4-7) (22)

The Chargers had the perfect chance to pick up ground on the Broncos after they lost to the Raiders, but they werne't able to beat the Colts and now look to be in real danger of missing the playoffs.

23. Houston Texans (4-7) (25)

The Texans remain a competitive team despite their poor record and will look to pick up another win in Week 13 against Jacksonville.

24. Jacksonville Jaguars (4-7) (23)

Jacksonville is one of this seasons most disappointing teams. Going into the season, many people had them reaching the Super Bowl, but at this point they will be lucky to finish at 8-8.

25. Cleveland Browns (4-7) (24)

The Browns are out of the playoff picture now and the GM and head coach Romeo Crennel could be in trouble if the Browns continue to lose.

26. Oakland Raiders (3-8) (29)

Darren McFadden did get more touches against Denver and ended up scoring 2 TDs for the Raiders. He'll have a good chance to score some more with the Chiefs visiting in Week 13..

27. San Francisco 49ers (3-8) (26)

The 49ers head for Buffalo this week and will try to avoid getting stomped like the Chiefs did by the Bills.

28. Seattle Seahawks (2-9) (27)

The Seahawks have been a little more competitive since Hassleback returned, but it hasn't translated in to the win column yet.

29. Cincinnati Bengals (1-9-1) (28)

Not much you can say about the Bengals at this point, except that they are part of a group of 4 or 5 teams that are just awful.

30. Kansas City Chiefs (1-10) (30)

The Chiefs got blasted by Buffalo in Week 12 and now will head out to play the Raiders.

31. St. Louis Rams (2-9) (31)

The Rams lost for the 8th time this season by more than 2 touchdowns and I'm sure it won't be the last.

32. Detroit Lions (0-11) (32)

Detroit is so bad that even when I saw they were up 17-0 against Tampa Bay, I figured they would find a way to blow that lead and they did.

NFL Picks - Week 12 Standings

Joe from What's The 401?!?! had a dominating record of 10-6 ATS this week to beat out Me & Ed from Ed The Sports Fan. One of these weeks I will break .500.

Here is a look at the Week 13 spreads and who I would pick as of right now:

My only thought about these spreads is what is up with the San Diego/Atlanta spread? San Diego is a 5.5 point favorite over the Falcons. Looks like the Falcons are getting no respect right now on the road. Other than that I think these spreads are pretty fair.

NFL Weekly: Donovan McNabb, Andy Reid, and the New York Jets

Donovan McNabb: Donovan McNabb has not only fallen victim to his own poor play of late, but also the shenanigans of his head coach Andy Reid. Reid benched McNabb in the second half of a 10-7 game against the Ravens after McNabb went 8-for-18 throwing for just 59 yards with two interceptions and a fumble. Sure, those are horrible numbers, but he's Donovan McNabb and he has earned the right to try to work through his struggles especially in a close game. It's not McNabb's fault that the Eagles don't have a power running back to help them out in short yardage situations. It's also not McNabb's fault that he has doesn't have a # 1 WR and probably not even a #2 to throw to. I don't see anyone like Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Anquan Boldin, Larry Fitzgerald, Reggie Wayne, or even a Greg Jennings on this Eagles team to help McNabb out. All the great QB's have top notch WR's around them and McNabb has nothing even close. McNabb can only take them so far and I think it's Reid who should be seeing the door, but even though Reid has named McNabb the starter for Thursday's game against Arizona, you honestly have to believe that Reid will be the coach next year and McNabb will be with another team. Chances are that wherever McNabb ends up his career will not end up on a positive note. The teams that are likely to have an opening at QB, will be the Chiefs, Lions, and Vikings of the world. Not exactly your top notch teams, although with his old offensive coordinator in Minnesota and Adrian Peterson roaming the backfield, maybe McNabb would be better off donning a purple uniform.

NY Jets: The Jets knocked off the Titans and ruined ended Tennessee's chances of a undefeated season and have now won 7 of their last 8 games. So I thought it would be a good time to look at the Jets and see where they rank in the NFL on both sides of the ball. Offensively, the Jets are ranked 11th overall in the NFL in yardage and 2nd in points scored. Their offense is driven by the running game, where they are ranked 8th overall versus 16th in passing. It is clear that the when the Jets revamped their offensive line the last two years it has strengthened their run game and allowed Thomas Jones to have a career year at the age of 30. The play of the offensive line is the true MVP of the Jets offense right now, allowing Thomas Jones to have a great season and for Brett Favre to reign things in a little. Defensively, the Jets are ranked 13th overall in yards allowed and 12th in points allowed. They are the third toughest team in the NFL to run the ball on giving up just 78 yards rushing a game. The reason they are so tough to run on is mostly due to DT Kris Jenkins who they acquired this season. Jenkins is being brought up as a possible defensive player of the year candidate and is wreaking havoc in the middle of the Jets defensive line. If the Jets do have one weakness it might be on pass defense where they are ranked 26th in the NFL, so they might not have problems with teams like the Steelers or Titans, but the Patriots or Colts could give them trouble with their more pass oriented offenses. I think the Jets have as good a chance of any team in the AFC to make the Super Bowl, but their pass defense is definitely something to keep an eye on.

- Miami Dolphins WR Greg Camarillo is out for a season with a knee injury. Camarillo was in the middle of a breakout season with 55 receptions and 613 yards receiving. This should mean even more looks for second year WR Ted Ginn.

MLB Weekly: Free Agents Bobby Abreu & Rafael Furcal

Bobby Abreu: There hasn't been much news on Yankees free agent OF Bobby Abreu, but there seems to be some interest from the Mets and Cubs. I know Abreu wants to stay in NY and is probably waiting to see if the Yankees are still interested in him. He is probably one of several players who have to wait to see who lands C.C. Sabathia, Mark Teixeira, and possibly Manny Ramirez before anyone offers him a contract. Abreu is considered to be in decline offensively, but he has been pretty consistent since joining the Yankees with a line of .291 AVG/.388 OBP/.459 SLG/.847 OPS the last 3 seasons. Abreu is also one of only three players to have higher than a .290 average, .840 OPS, 300 RBI, and 50 SB. The other two? Alex Rodriguez and David Wright. So Abreu is certainly still a solid offensive player. The only drawback to signing Abreu is that his defense in RF is among the worst in the majors.

Rafael Furcal: Furcal is probably the shortstop who is most in demand of any of the available shortstops out there. There are a number of teams who are interested in bringing in Furcal, including the Orioles, Braves, Giants, Cubs, Dodgers and A's. I think Furcal would be an excellent pickup for a contending team and it will be interesting to see where he lands. He's one of those players who can make a huge difference in a teams offense at the top of the lineup with his hitting and base running skills. Furcal is looking for a 4 year deal, but so far the offers he has received have only been for 3 years. The Orioles might be targeting Cesar Izturis at SS instead of Furcal, because he is solid defensively and would be much cheaper.

Other MLB News:

- Bad news for the World Series Champion Philadelphia Phillies, who might be without Chase Utley next season up until June because of a hip surgery.

- More injury news as the LA Dodgers will have to worry about Chad Billingsley's health after he neede surgey after slipping and breaking his leg. The Dodgers say Billingsley should be ready to throw by spring trainging, but I'm sure they will be watching him closely to see there are any lingering effects from the injury. There is also some belief that the Dodgers are just saying that, because they are still interested in trying to trade for Padres starter Jake Peavy.

- The Chicago White Sox are looking to make some more moves after trading away Nick Swisher. They are looking into a number of possible trades that could include Jermaine Dye, Bobby Jenks, or Javier Vasquez.

- The San Francisco Giants signed left handed reliever Jeremy Affeldt to a two year, $8 million contract. Affeldt finished the season with a 3.33 ERA and 80 K's in 78.1 innings out of the bullpen. The Giants are also interested in SS Rafael Furcal, 2B Orlando Hudson, and of course C.C. Sabathia.

- The Cubs re-signed pitcher Ryan Dempster to a 4 year, $52 million contract. Dempster is coming off of a career year where he went 17-6 with a 2.96 ERA and 187 K's in 206.2 innings of work. It's always risky to sign veteran players who have had career years after not having much of the same success throughout their career. It's possible Dempster will be a solid pitcher for the Cubs for the rest of his contract, but I would be surprised if he comes anywhere near the great numbers he put up this season.

- The Red Sox have traded CF Coco Crisp to the Royals for relief pitcher Ramon Ramirez. Crisp will most likely be the Royals starting CF. Ramirez is pretty much an unknown pitcher, but he did have a 2.64 ERA with 70 K's in 71.2 innings.

- The Cardinals signed left handed reliever Trever Miller. Miller had a 4.14 ERA with 44 K's in 43.1 innings for the Tampa Bay Rays this season.

NBA Weekly: New York Knicks Trade Jamal Crawford & Zach Randolph


New York Knicks: The New York Knicks made a pair of deal yesterday trading both Jamal Crawford and Zach Randolph. Crawford was traded to the Warriors for disgruntled forward Al Harrington and Randolph was sent packing to the LA Clippers for Cuttino Mobley and Tim Thomas. On the surface, looking at the players involved in these trades, you would have to give the advantage to the teams that the Knicks traded with. However, what the Knicks are doing here is dumping payroll so they can go after some of the big free agents in the years 2010-2011. According to Jalen Rose, this trade means that Chris Bosh and Lebron James will be playing for the Knicks in 2010:


Obviously Jalen Rose doesn't have any kind of inside scoop on this, but the general idea is right. The Knicks are going to land a big name free agent in the next few years, because they are dumping payroll and setting themselves up nicely for the future. They might not get Lebron and Bosh, but I'm sure it won't be too hard to convince a big name free agent to come play in New York City.

Vince Carter: Vinsanity gets a lot of hate from fans around the country for being soft and for not being a go to player, but he is playing some great basketball right now. At the age of 31, on a rebuilding, young team without Jason Kidd, many people probably thought that Vince had seen better days on the court and his game would start to fall off but 11 games into the season that has not been the case at all. Carter is putting up some of the best numbers in his career right now averaging 24.1 point, 5.5 assists, and 4.3 rebounds, while shooting a career high 47.5% from the floor. The 5.5 assists would also be a career high if he finished with that many per game this season. This is somewhat surprising to me because I thought for sure without Jason Kidd that Vince Carter would turn into a gunner and probably average 30+ points a game with a low FG% and low assist totals, but instead he has been playing some pretty damn efficient basketball. In fact, Carter currently ranks 14th in the NBA in player efficiency. Definitely a surprise considering all the other variable that were working against him going into this season.
Last night Vince won the game for the Nets in overtime with a reverse dunk off of an alley-oop on an inbounds play:


Washington Wizards: This just in: The Washington Wizards stink. In fact, with a record of 1-9, they have been so horrible that Gilbert Arenas is already talking about the potential to pick up a great player in the NBA draft lottery. Unfortunately for Arenas, I think the main reason the Wizards stink right now is that they are paying him max player money to someone who has a recent history of injury problems. I still think this was a huge mistake and the Wizards are paying for it now, because they didn't have enough depth to add any meaningful players once they signed Arenas and they could have used someone like Roger Mason, Jr who they let get away to the Spurs this offseason. Mason, Jr has been solid for the Spurs since starting for the injured Tony Parker and is averaging 15.2 points a game, while 46.4% shooting from the floor and 50.8% shooting from three. The Wizards certainly could use that kind of production in place of an injured Arenas.

Other NBA News:

- Jermaine O'Neal is day to day after straining his left knee. I'm not surprised O'Neal is hurt again and I'm sure this won't be the last time this season. O'Neal hasn't been all that great this season while he's been healthy anyway. He is averaging just 12.9 points on a dismal 41.0% shooting for the Raptors. He has been doing his job on the boards though where he is averaging 9.3 a game. Still, whether healthy or not, I think it's pretty clear Jermaine O'Neal is no longer an All-Star caliber player in the NBA.

- The Oklahoma City Thunder fired head coach P.J. Carlesimo and named Scott Brooks interim coach. Not sure what the managment was looking for Carlesimo to because this team is just not that talented and also very young. However, I don't think Carlesimo is that great of a coach as it is, so it's probably best to can him now and get someone in there who can start a foundation and grow with this team.

NFL Picks - Week 12 - 2008


Here are the Week 12 picks from Me, Ed from Ed The Sports Fan, and Joe from What's The 401?!?!.

NFL Picks - Week 12 -2008:
Picks of the Week:

Best Bet Pick: New England (+2) at Miami. The Patriots found out last week how tough it can be to beat a team twice in one season after losing to the Jets at home. Even though the Pats historically struggle in Miami, I think they'll be motivated to get some revenge on the Dolphins for laying that whooping on them earlier this season, so I'm rolling with them as my best bet in a week where most games could probably go either way.

Sleeper Pick: Seattle (+3.5) against Washington. Washington's offense has been a little shaky the past few weeks and they haven't been explosive on the road since early in the season. With Matt Hasselback back under center for the Seahawks, I think they will put up a fight against the Redskins and cover the spread.

Danger Game: Baltimore (-1) over Philadelphia. I honestly would not recommend betting on half of these games this week, but if there was one game I would definitely stay away from it's got to be the Ravens and Eagles. The Eagles are coming off an embarrassing tie against the Bengals and I think they might bounce back this week against the Ravens, but at the same time they might put up another stinker.
