NBA Weekly: New York Knicks Trade Jamal Crawford & Zach Randolph

New York Knicks: The New York Knicks made a pair of deal yesterday trading both Jamal Crawford and Zach Randolph. Crawford was traded to the Warriors for disgruntled forward Al Harrington and Randolph was sent packing to the LA Clippers for Cuttino Mobley and Tim Thomas. On the surface, looking at the players involved in these trades, you would have to give the advantage to the teams that the Knicks traded with. However, what the Knicks are doing here is dumping payroll so they can go after some of the big free agents in the years 2010-2011. According to Jalen Rose, this trade means that Chris Bosh and Lebron James will be playing for the Knicks in 2010:

Obviously Jalen Rose doesn't have any kind of inside scoop on this, but the general idea is right. The Knicks are going to land a big name free agent in the next few years, because they are dumping payroll and setting themselves up nicely for the future. They might not get Lebron and Bosh, but I'm sure it won't be too hard to convince a big name free agent to come play in New York City.

Vince Carter: Vinsanity gets a lot of hate from fans around the country for being soft and for not being a go to player, but he is playing some great basketball right now. At the age of 31, on a rebuilding, young team without Jason Kidd, many people probably thought that Vince had seen better days on the court and his game would start to fall off but 11 games into the season that has not been the case at all. Carter is putting up some of the best numbers in his career right now averaging 24.1 point, 5.5 assists, and 4.3 rebounds, while shooting a career high 47.5% from the floor. The 5.5 assists would also be a career high if he finished with that many per game this season. This is somewhat surprising to me because I thought for sure without Jason Kidd that Vince Carter would turn into a gunner and probably average 30+ points a game with a low FG% and low assist totals, but instead he has been playing some pretty damn efficient basketball. In fact, Carter currently ranks 14th in the NBA in player efficiency. Definitely a surprise considering all the other variable that were working against him going into this season.
Last night Vince won the game for the Nets in overtime with a reverse dunk off of an alley-oop on an inbounds play:

Washington Wizards: This just in: The Washington Wizards stink. In fact, with a record of 1-9, they have been so horrible that Gilbert Arenas is already talking about the potential to pick up a great player in the NBA draft lottery. Unfortunately for Arenas, I think the main reason the Wizards stink right now is that they are paying him max player money to someone who has a recent history of injury problems. I still think this was a huge mistake and the Wizards are paying for it now, because they didn't have enough depth to add any meaningful players once they signed Arenas and they could have used someone like Roger Mason, Jr who they let get away to the Spurs this offseason. Mason, Jr has been solid for the Spurs since starting for the injured Tony Parker and is averaging 15.2 points a game, while 46.4% shooting from the floor and 50.8% shooting from three. The Wizards certainly could use that kind of production in place of an injured Arenas.

Other NBA News:

- Jermaine O'Neal is day to day after straining his left knee. I'm not surprised O'Neal is hurt again and I'm sure this won't be the last time this season. O'Neal hasn't been all that great this season while he's been healthy anyway. He is averaging just 12.9 points on a dismal 41.0% shooting for the Raptors. He has been doing his job on the boards though where he is averaging 9.3 a game. Still, whether healthy or not, I think it's pretty clear Jermaine O'Neal is no longer an All-Star caliber player in the NBA.

- The Oklahoma City Thunder fired head coach P.J. Carlesimo and named Scott Brooks interim coach. Not sure what the managment was looking for Carlesimo to because this team is just not that talented and also very young. However, I don't think Carlesimo is that great of a coach as it is, so it's probably best to can him now and get someone in there who can start a foundation and grow with this team.
