NFL Weekly

Brady Quinn: The Cleveland Browns have finally cut the cord on the struggling Derek Anderson and will be starting Brady Quinn against the Denver Broncos in Week 10. Anderson has been pretty much horrible for the most part this season completing only 49.8% of his passes, while throwing for 1,454 yards, 9 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions for a QB rating of just 68.9. With numbers like that, it was only a matter of time before Brady Quinn got a chance to show what he can do. In fact back in my Week 7 power rankings, I had the following to say about Anderson and Quinn:

Derek Anderson was horrible against the Redskins completing only 14 of his 37 pass attempts. I'm not sure how much longer the Browns can wait to before they give Brady Quinn a shot. At this point, I don't see what they have to lose. Maybe Week 10 at home against Denver would be a good time to give him a chance.

People seem surprised by the move to start Quinn now, but with the Browns tough schedule, this is the best time to start him with the Denver Broncos and their horrible defense coming to Cleveland. The Browns are probably thinking that Quinn will play well against the Broncos and then gain confidence that will help him later on this season when the defenses get tougher. I happen to think it's a good idea, because at some point Quinn was going to get a chance this season anyway, so might as well start him against the worst defense in the NFL to get his feet wet. Plus, they didn't draft Quinn in the first round to have him sit on the bench and with the Browns struggling it's makes sense to see what he can do.

Steelers/Redskins: The Steelers were able to beat the Redskins last night 23-6 in a game that hada few things I wanted to touch on. You never want to see anyone get hurt, but it was nice to see Byron Leftwhich filling in for injured Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger and playing well. Leftwhich was pretty much left for dead the past few seasons as a QB, but played well when Big Ben went down, completing 7 of his 10 pass attempts and throwing for 129 yards and a score. Meanwhile, the Steelers defense showed up big time holding Clinton Portis to just 51 yards rushing on 13 carries. This made life hard for Jason Campbell who threw his first two interceptions on the season. Campbell went 249 consecutive passes to start the season without throwing an interception, which is the second longest streak in NFL history behind Bernie Kosar's 286 attempts. Finally, for 17 consecutive US Presidential elections, the winner of the Redskins last home game before the election has predicted who will get more votes. If the Redskins win the game, then the party that is currently in office will receive the most votes, and if they lose then the other party will receive more votes. This is good news for Barack Obama, but with Barack supposedly having such a big lead going into today, how many people would have bet on the Steelers if they knew that little bit of information earlier on in the week? I know I certainly would have.

Other NFL News:

- Matt Schaub injured his MCL and will miss 2-4 weeks, which is not good news for the Texans who were starting to get on a roll offensively and now will have to go back to Sage Rosenfels at QB.

- It looks like Daunte Culpepper and his TD roll are back in business as the Lions plan on signing Culpepper to a 2-year deal. Culpepper might be the Lions only chance to win a game this season.

- Kyle Orton was carted off the field on Sunday with an injured ankle and is tests to determine the extent of the injury. This would be a big loss for the Bears, especially since they host the undefeated Titans in Week 10.

- Injured QB Matt Hasslebeck will return to practice this week in a limited role, so he might be in action soon and help the Seahawks spoil some other team's playoff hopes.

- Buffalo safety Donte Whitner separated his shoulder and is out indefinitely. The Bills are starting to get hit with some injuries to key players and it could affect their chances of winning the AFC East.

- The Denver Broncos placed both Michael Pittman and Andre Hall on injured reserve. It looks like rookie Ryan Torain will have to get the bulk of the carries for the Broncos now.
