MLB Weekly

Francisco Rodriguez: Francisco Rodriguez broke the single season save record last night with his 58th save of the season. The previous record was held by former White Sox closer Bobby Thigpen. K-Rod has had a phenomenal season for the Angels and will certainly get some consideration for both the Cy Young amd MVP Awards, however, I don't believe that he should win either award. Cliff Lee looks like a lock to win the Cy Young award and my guess would be that Dustin Pedroia or Kevin Youkilis will win the MVP award. I wouldn't be totally shocked to see K-Rod come closer to winning the MVP than the Cy Young though.

David Price: The Tampa Bay Rays called up top prospect David Price and he made his major league debut out of the bullpen on Sunday. Price came in for Edwin Jackson in relief for the Rays and pitched 5.1 innings, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits; while striking out 4. It will be interesting to see how much Price contributes to the Rays down the stretch and in the playoffs. Every season, there is usually a young player who comes up to the majors late in the season and contributes something to a championship team. Jaccoby Ellsbury and Francisco Rodriguez are good example of this. The Rays are hoping that Price could be that guy this year.

Albert Pujols: Pujols, who I still believe should be the NL MVP, became the third player in major league history to drive in 100 runs in each of his first eight seasons. The two other players were Al Simmons and Ted Williams. Simmons holds the record with 11 straight 100 RBI seasons to start his career. Pujols continues to have an incredible season, despite the fact that he might need Tommy John surgery after the season. I had completely forgotten that Pujols decided to put off the surgery at the beginning of the year, which I thought at the time might be an issue, but Pujols is having one of his best season ever.

Chicago White Sox: Paul Konerko sprained his right knee and is unsure of when he will return. Konerko had been hot at the plate lately, raising his average to .244 after being as low as .212 at one point. The White Sox have already lost Carlos Quentin and they are hoping he can return for the playoffs, if they make it there. The White Sox are only a half game up on the Minnesota Twins and that race for the playoffs should be the most interesting in the AL by far.

Carlos Zambrano: You might have missed this with all the football going on yesterday but Carlos Zambrano threw a no-hitter against the Houston Astros last night. Zambrano just came back last night after missing his last start with arm trouble. It was the first no-hitter by a Cubs pitcher since 1972. Jon Lester of the Red Sox is the only other pitcher to throw a no-hitter this season. Looks like Zambrano will be healthy for the Cubs in the post-season after all.
